Lake Marathon or the Marathon Reservoir is a man-made water supply reservoir formed from the construction of Marathon Dam at the junction of Charadros and Varnavas torrents near the town of Marathon. Its construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1929. The dam was made of concrete and is entirely covered by Pentelic marble.
The Athens Classic Marathon, The Authentic, is an annual marathon road race held in Athens, normally in early November (the second Sunday of November), since 1972. The 42,195m Marathon Race is inspired by the Ancient Greek legend of Pheidippides, a news-bearing foot soldier from ancient Athens, who announced – with his last words – the victory of the Greeks against the Persians during the Marathon Battle in 490 BC.
Mount Pentelicus is a mountain in Attica, situated northeast of Athens and southwest of Marathon. Marble from Mount Pentelicus is of exceptionally high quality and was used to construct much of the Athenian Acropolis. Later, Pentelic marble was exported to Rome, where it was used in construction and in sculptures.
